What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive or uncontrollable sweating. This condition is very common and can be embarrassing for some. It can lead to social isolation because constant moisture can encourage fungal overgrowth, which can lead to unpleasant odours.

This condition typically occurs in the armpits, but can also affect other areas, such as the face, palms, and feet. When it affects the armpits, it can cause people to limit the type of clothing and colour of fabrics worn. Deodorants can be ineffective and cause skin irritation due to excessive use.

In addition to emotional issues in some individuals, it can result in physical problems such as feeling cold, having clammy hands and dehydration.

Skin infections result from repeated rubbing of the skin as one attempts to remove the excessive sweat.

Normal sweating happens when the nervous system triggers the sweat glands to produce fluid to cool the body. This can happen in response to heat, physical activity or stress. In hyperhidrosis, the nerves become overactive, triggering the sweat glands even without stimuli such as heat or physical activity. Hyperhidrosis often runs in families (genetic) and may be triggered when you feel nervous or stressed.
