As we age, we lose collagen and bone support for the cheeks. The cheek fat pads lose volume and descend, which causes the cheeks to flatten and nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth) to deepen. The volume loss is noticeable in the cheeks and midface, which affects the overall look and balance of our face. In addition, our skin loses volume and elasticity, causing it to sag, especially in the midface. The area under our eyes (tear troughs) becomes hollower and sags, partly due to the loss of support provided by the cheeks as we age.
