Lip Lines & Wrinkles
What are lip lines?
Lip lines (perioral rhytides) are the lines or wrinkles that radiate outward from the upper or lower lips.
What causes lip lines?
As we age, our collagen production diminishes, causing the skin to lose elasticity and volume. In addition, the fat in the perioral lip area reduces with age. This fat acts like a mattress under the skin, providing a plumping effect. As the fat goes, the skin sits directly on the muscle (orbicularis oris muscle), which means the dynamic lines of movement are then visible. This loss of support tissue and thinning of the skin causes lip lines to form and, over time, become permanently etched into the skin.
Lip Lines are exacerbated by:
- Repeated facial expressions, such as pursing the lips and very expressive faces
- Smoking
- Excessive sun exposure
Consultation for minimising the appearance of lip lines
- We offer consultations to assess your lip lines and an appropriate non-surgical treatment plan, which can replace the volume loss caused by ageing in the lip area. Solutions include adding support and volume to the lip lines. As a result, the skin has a soft support structure to sit on, and the lines from the movement of the muscles underneath are less visible. If “lipstick bleeding” into the lines is an issue, we can discuss options to address this as well. A comprehensive understanding of facial proportions and balance is essential at the initial assessment to help ensure a natural-looking result. At Face To Face Medical, we avoid treatment plans that can cause an unnatural lip.
- A detailed assessment is critical when consulting for lip lines. The ideal candidate has volume loss and mild to moderate lines. Mono Thread treatment or laser therapy may be a more suitable option in circumstances where the lip is already quite full. Our experienced clinicians will provide an honest assessment of your situation and your treatment options.
- While we are at the forefront of aesthetic lip shape, we treat patients with the backbone of science, prudence and trusted safe practices. All of our clinicians are constantly trained on up-to-date lip techniques and best practices.
